The brief challenged us to design a nest for two lovers. We were to reach a concept for the nest before seeing the site on which it would be situated. To inspire a concept we created a story about two lovers who would act as the clients for the project.
Forbidden Love: A tale of passion and power chords
It was Friday evening in October. Rodney was rooting through his draws looking for the ticket he had bought two months prior, after excessive furniture rearranging he finally found it, grabbing his motorbike helmet muttered a half-hearted good bye to his wife and left the house.
Rodney was stationery supplies coordinator for Marks and Spencer’s corporate Head Quarters. His working day started 8.30am with a coffee and a trip to the stationery cupboard to check that things were in order, generally post it notes would need stocking up and on an exciting day maybe marker pens The rest of day would be passed compiling orders and responding to stationery related happenings about the office.
The highlight of his day was the lunch hour, where he would visit a nearby Spanish delicatessen, not for the food however which was quite average but to see the lovely Esmeralda who worked behind the counter there. Esmeralda, like Rodney was unhappily married, bored with a life of chorizo and sun dried tomatoes, she longed to indulge her passions of death metal music and motorbikes. She too looked forward to the lunch hour when Rodney would visit the delicatessen. She would often give him extra artichokes in his salad as any overt flirting would incur the wrath of her excessively jealous husband.
That evening Esmeralda told her husband she was off to visit her sister, packed her bag and left. However turning right at the end of her road instead of left she headed into the city towards ‘the death pit’ a music venue where her favourite band Slayer would be playing.
Rodney too arrived at the bar unbeknownst to Esmeralda (and vice versa), slighty late but just in time for the start of the show.
The crowd were frantic and the music was loud. Everyone was leaping about in the mosh pit to the chorus of ‘Raining Blood’, when there was a collision of heads. Esmeralda slightly stunned turned round to see who she had headbutted and low and behold it was Rodney. It was love at first glare, the couple fell into each others arms and spent the rest of the evening that way.
Both Rodney and Esmeralda continued their romance, however agreed that neither of their spouses should find out. During the week it was difficult for them to see each other because of the close-nit working environment they were in. They longed for a place to be together away from the prying eyes and knife wielding hands of their co-workers and partners.
